Harrison County is Orange; No Super Six for High School Football Season as Only 1 School in Each Class Would Be Eligible to Play

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on November 28, 2020

With an ending that could only happen in a year like 2020, the books closed on the Bridgeport High School football team’s season on Saturday.

Actually, the statewide season came to an abrupt end at 5 p.m. (except for the Bluefield-Fairmont Senior game which started at 4 p.m.) thanks to the latest update on the West Virginia Department of Education School Alert System map.

Harrison County is orange which means the Indians’ season ends as a scheduled Class AAA semifinal game on Sunday against Cabell Midland cannot take place.

That game was scheduled on Sunday because Cabell County was orange last week. Although Cabell is gold according to today’s updated map, since Bridgeport had to wait on them to get back down to gold, Cabell Midland is eliminated from the playoffs.

Throughout the postseason, teams who were red or orange on a 5 p.m. Saturday map were given a week to try to get down to at least gold by the next week’s 5 p.m. Saturday map and the game could be played on Sunday. Bridgeport therefore is eliminated because there is no option for a Sunday game next week at the Super 6.

The Super 6, which was moved from Wheeling to Charleston on Friday, is effectively now canceled. With Bridgeport and Cabell Midland both out and Musselman also unable to play its semifinal game on Sunday because Berkeley County is orange, that leaves South Charleston as the last team standing.

The same scenario played out in Class AA and A as well. Robert C. Byrd’s situation is exactly the same as Bridgeport’s, just with Oak Glen as the opponent. With RCB and Oak Glen out that leaves Fairmont Senior as the last team standing following the Polar Bears' 21-19 win against Bluefield on Saturday (Fairmont Senior and Bluefield were in the second quarter when the map was updated).

In Class A, Ritchie County was red on the updated map and already past the semifinals because both of their potential opponents, East Hardy or Tolsia were both eliminated last week because of the map, leaving the Rebels with nobody to play this week.

St. Marys defeated Pendleton County, 21-7, on Saturday to emerge as the only school left standing in Class A.
