The term originating from the 1940s – when swarms of people infiltrated Philadelphia the Friday after Thanksgiving to watch the Army-Navy game – Black Friday accounts for about 20% of annual retail sales. Whether or not you are heading to the big box stores for door buster sales, our local shops are inviting and encouraging you to take part in Small Business Saturday.
Dedicated to supporting small businesses and communities across the U.S., Small Business Saturday was founded in 2010 by American Express. Part of the Shop Small Movement, it has become embraced by retailers and consumers alike. And in addition to discounts, Small Business Saturday comes along with extra perks.
Locally owned boutiques and shops have a few tricks up their sleeves for this year’s event, which takes place Saturday, Nov. 30.
About You Monograms – which in addition to monogram personalization features an array of home décor, kitchen, children’s games and toys, personal items and more – will be open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and is offering a deep discount just in time for holiday gift purchasing.
“The sale for the day is 25 percent off with an in-store donation to our local Wreaths Across America,” said owner Lisa Lang. “We will be offering tastings of various products we carry such as dips, jams, jellies and cookies.”
Also, everyone one gets a thank-you gift for supporting small, Lang said.
At Hempworks, owner Mary Francis Smith has an array of holiday specials ongoing. The purchase of two candles comes along with one free candle and the purchase of an Anju bracelet comes along with one-half price matching earrings. Hempworks is also offering 25 percent off baby blanket bundles and fountains/diffusers as well as free potpourri with the purchase of a ceramic potpourri pot and free essential oil with the purchase of an essential oil bracelet.
Mountain Mama Magick is also observing Small Business Saturday.
“We are doing lots of sales and if you book a service with me in the shop on that exact day, you get half off,” said owner Whitney Oliverio.
Sales include a free tumbled crystal with the purchase of two, herb bundles for $5 each, tea blends at 15 percent off, new seasonal candles at 10 percent off and half price sales of many items. All customers will be treated to one free cup of tea.
SunmoonApparel is also providing refreshments, one free visit to the herbal hot cocoa bar. Owner Kate Glaspell said she is also offering various store-wide discounts. SunmoonApparel features sustainable, handmade and upcycles items, as well as all-natural wellness.
As shoppers get hungry, locally owned eateries has that covered too.
Winnie’s Café is offering a free coffee or latte with each transaction this Saturday. Gift cards will be available for purchase and owner Brandi Starkey Post is offering 10 percent off the popular Pure Heaven protein shake, as well as any holiday cocktail drink.
The new Crunch Time Gourmet Popcorn & Apples will also be open for Small Business Saturday, offering all dipped apples at 10 percent.
All the above-referenced small businesses are located on Main Street, but others in the city will also open their doors.
