Mountaineer Heroes of Honor Foundation Raises $150,000 with Sept. 9 Golf Tournament

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on September 17, 2022

The Mountaineer Heroes of Honor Foundation held its third annual golf tournament Friday, Sept. 9 at Bridgeport Country Club, raising $150,000 for U.S. veterans.

“This foundation means a lot to all of us. We are trying to grow the foundation and raise money that we can donate to veterans, veterans’ families, scholarships for veterans, and organizations that take care of veterans,” said Joseph Oliverio, U.S. Army veteran and vice president of Mountaineer Heroes of Honor. “The money we raise also stays in the state of West Virginia, and we are 100 percent nonprofit.”

At the Sept. 9 event, money was presented to Dr. Jude Black Hearts of Gold, Wreaths for Veterans Across America, Project Healing Water, the Veterans Administration Hospital, and Operation Firm Handshake.

One hundred eight golfers participated in the tournament with 20-30 additional guests and sponsors. The event opened with a 21-gun salute by the VFW, honoring fallen soldiers. The USS West Virginia crew made a guest appearance and HealthNet landed a helicopter on the golf course. Comedian Mike Burton (“Mall Cop,” “King of Queens”) from Los Angeles entertained with a comedy skit.

Following the tournament was a dinner and an auction featuring items including a custom-built rifle, Bob Huggins basketball, and gift baskets donated by local businesses. The Greg Ice Band performed, and the event closed with fireworks.

Board members are Josh Wyckoff (Marine veteran, president), Joseph Oliverio (U.S. Army veteran, vice president), Zach Davis (U.S. Army veteran, treasurer), Nicole Oliverio (secretary), David Peasak, Dr. Jacyln Rominger, Dr. Tim Peasak (U.S. Army veteran), Rachel Wyckoff, Ronnie Roberts and Tristian Jenkins (U.S. Army veteran).
