Three Athletic Teams, One From BHS, Two from BMS to be Honored at Monday's Council Meeting

By Chris Johnson on November 29, 2024

Three Bridgeport athletic teams, one from the high school, two from the middle school, will be recognized for their achievements at Monday’s City Council meeting.

From Bridgeport Middle School, both the football and girls soccer teams will be honored.

In football, the Braves recently wrapped a perfect 8-0 season with a win against University to win the NC7 Conference Championship for the fourth consecutive year.

The girls soccer team outscored its opponents this season by a combined margin of 72-2 en route to capturing the Mid Mountain 10 Conference Championship.

Just a few weeks ago the Bridgeport High School volleyball team capped a 52-8-2 season by defeating Herbert Hoover for the Class AAA state championship. It marks the second-ever volleyball state title for Bridgeport, having previously won the Class AA state title in 2018.

“What really excites me about the city recognizing these teams, it just really reinforces the fact that we are a community,” City Manager Patrick Ford said. “When a school is performing whether it is on our own field, outside our community, in the state capital, they represent Bridgeport and Bridgeport supports them.

“Our energy and our DNA runs not only through our schools, but that life pulse runs through the residents, the students, it runs right through the heart of City Council. When we win, we win together and when we lose, we lose together and when we celebrate, we celebrate together.

“They bring that same energy they play with on the field into our Council chambers. There is no better day to perform business than when our student athletes bring that energy to City Hall.”

As far as the rest of the meeting goes, there are only two other items on the agenda.

Under new business, Council will consider and act on a contract with Terracon Consultants, Inc., for the Deegan Dam Investigation Project in the amount of $82,500.00 with an additional 10 percent contingency of $8,250.00 for a total of $90,750.00.

“We have selected Terracon to do the work because we want them to specifically identify what has been causing the problem with the leak,” Ford said. “We also want them to not identify one solution. We want solutions, we want options, and we want the costs for these solutions and a schedule to fix the problem once they identify it.

“That study is going to take up to six weeks and we want them to start by the end of the year.”

Council will also hear department reports for Engineering from City Engineer Beth Fox and Public Works from Public Works Director Tiny Grimes.

There will be a 6 p.m. work session to talk about advanced construction planning (conducted in executive session) prior to the start of Monday’s regular meeting at 7 p.m.

Pastor Jerry Fiscus from Living Water Church is scheduled to provide the invocation at the start of Monday’s regular meeting which will be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Andy Lang will provide a report by the Mayor and Ford will do the same for the City Manager position.

As always, time will be set aside for public comments.

On Tuesday, Council will meet at the Bridgeport Fire Department for the second part of it’s strategic planning session with reports from human resources, emergency management, the Fire Department, the Police Department, community development/code enforcement, engineering/wastewater and public works.

The second part of the strategic planning session will count as Council’s second required meeting for the month of December and the next regular meeting won’t be until January.

“I was really excited and impressed with our department heads the first time around,” Ford said in regard to the first strategic planning session on Nov. 19. “We really took a deep dive into the city. I expect the same thing out of the second one.

“I love our department heads. They are all high performers and fortunately we are blessed to have the resources to do exciting projects that focus on building community and securing our future.”
