By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on August 05, 2022

Bridgeport High School graduate Emma Romano, a freshman at the University of Arizona, completed her first year by being named “Outstanding Freshman of the Year” by the Frankie Honors College. Emma is currently pursuing a degree in molecular and cellular biology with a minor in Health and Human Values.  More than 11,500 first-year students and 45,000 total students are enrolled at the University of Arizona. Romano is the first West Virginian to be a recipient of this award.

Romano’s mentor, Dr. Lysette Davi, former Director of Experiential Learning at the Franke Honors College, who nominated Romano for the award, stated, "I nominated Emma Romano for this award because of her exceptional leadership. As a first-year student, she challenged herself to transform a service-learning club that directly impacts the Tucson community. She makes each member of the club feel valued and listened to which creates deep and meaningful relationships. I am very impressed with her ability to lead others."

Romano, maintained a 4.0 G.P.A. her first year. She is continuing her work with the Campus Sustainability Fund as an Outreach and Connections Specialist and the President of Honors Service Club.  She also is an Honors Path Mentor, an Honors Undergraduate Researcher for STEM Education, and Preceptor to biology professor, Dr. Stephanie Capaldi.  “Outstanding Freshman” is awarded to one first-year student in the Honors College, based on the criteria set by the mission and vision of the Frankie Honors College that entails implementing ideas despite academic boundaries and embracing new challenges during the academic path of the recipient.

Emma is the eldest daughter of WV State Senator Mike Romano and Amy Romano.
