Bridgeport's Carson Winkie Listed as Defensive Player of Year in 'AA' on Coalfields & Co. Web Site for 2019

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on January 13, 2020

It's been a banner year for Bridgeport High School senior Carson Winkie. Not only did Winkie help lead the Indians to the Class AA state championship with a monster performance in the Indians 21-14 win against Bluefield at Wheeling Island Stadium with 200 yards rushing, but he also turned in another solid game on defense.

It was on defense where Winkie simply dominated from day one of the 2019 season. The Bridgeport linebacker  finished the season with 96 tackles, four tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, two interceptions, a pass breakup and a defensive touchdown.

Because of that, the Web site Coalfields and Co. named Winkie the 2019 Class AA Defensive Player of the Year. Winkie beat out three other finalists in Michael Lemley (DB) of Oak Glen, Dillon Taylor (LB) Poca, and John Covert (LB) Winfield.

The same Web site listed its all-West Virginia Gold Team. The team is similar to an all-state team, but it includes all three classifications for one team. Winkie earned one of three linebacker spots, while senior Josh Wojciechowicz was named as the long snapper.
