Week 10 of WVSSAC Football Rankings Show Tribe in Position to Host Throughout Football Postseason

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on November 06, 2019

With the final week of the regular season at hand, Bridgeport High School’s football team could be a win away from clinching homefield advantage throughout the postseason. Based on Tuesday’s week 10 edition of the WVSSAC standings, the Indians are ranked No. 2 in Class AA.

The rankings in the WVSSAC poll, which determine the 16-team playoff field in each classification, are computer generated. The 8-1 Indians are currently ahead of two undefeated teams based on their wins against what is a tougher schedule.

What that means is if the Tribe beats 0-9 Philip Barbour Friday at Wayne Jamison Field is that they will likely be home for as long as they continue to win in the ‘AA’ postseason. Bridgeport will also need favored teams it has beaten this year to win as well to provide the needed bonus points in the computer-generated equation to assure the games will be played at home.

Fairmont Senior, 9-0, remains No. 1. The defending state champions are heavily favored to finish the year unbeaten.

Barring a lose to the Colts, it appears the only team with a chance to jump Bridgeport is Poca. The Dots are 9-0 on the year.

Three teams are tied for the No. 4 spot. Whoever ends up there could potentially be in a Class AA semifinal battle with Fairmont Senior. Keyser, Frankfort and Bluefield are all 8-1. Keyser and Frankfort play one another Friday.

Currently, three other local teams are in the field. North Marion, 7-2, is ranked No. 8. Liberty is in the No. 15 spot at 7-2, while Lewis County is No. 16 at 6-3.

The top 16 teams in each classification make the field.

Martinsburg, 10-0, has secured the top spot in Class AAA. Doddridge County is also in the driver’s seat for a number one seed in the Class A division. The Bulldogs head into the final week of the regular season ranked No. 1.

The official rankings and first round pairings, locations and times will be revealed Sunday in Parkersburg.
